Practice Release

I understand and acknowledge that Aikido is a martial art involving strenuous physical activity and bodily contact. No evaluation or judgment of skill level or physical health has been made by Austin Aikikai or any of its members (collectively referred to as “Austin Aikikai” hereafter) in allowing me or any minor child or children for whom I am legally responsible (collectively referred to, whether one or more, as My Children hereafter) to participate in Aikido practice. As a condition to, and in consideration of, the privilege of participation in Aikido practice, I agree and promise to assume all risk and responsibility for any and all injuries or damages suffered by me or My Children, caused by third parties to me or My Children, or caused by me or My Children to third parties arising out of participation in Aikido practice wherever occurring.

I hereby agree that if I or My Children or anyone acting on my or My Children’s behalf should claim that Austin Aikikai or any of its employees or volunteers is liable for any damages as a result of injuries to myself or My Children that occur during the practice of Aikido or during any other use of the facilities or services of Austin Aikikai, I shall hold Austin Aikikai and each of its employees and volunteers harmless from such liability and shall defend Austin Aikikai and its employees and volunteers against any such claim and shall pay any damages that might be due to myself or My Children or any other person as a result of injuries to myself or My Children.

I hereby agree for myself, my heirs and representatives that neither Austin Aikikai nor their agents or servants shall be liable for any such claim, demand, damage, injury, or loss. I also understand and acknowledge that because Aikido involves repeated and prolonged close bodily contact, practicing it increases my risk of contracting contagious diseases, including but not limited to COVID-19, SARS, MERS, or influenza.

As a condition to, and in consideration of, the privilege of participation in Aikido practice, I agree and promise to assume all risk and responsibility for any illnesses contracted or caused by me or My Children while participating in Aikido practice wherever occurring or while in physical spaces controlled by Austin Aikikai.

By confirming this booking I acknowledge that I have read and fully understand this release and I intend it to be a legally binding document.

I agree to strictly follow the guidelines for training during the initial phase of opening. Find our current guidelines at:

If you have a fever (temperature of 100F or higher), a cough, a sore throat, chills, unusual shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, loss of sense of smell or taste, unusual body aches, or any other symptom of illness, you may not attend practice. By entering the dojo and/or practicing, you are verifying that you do not have any symptoms of contagious illness.

  • Come and go through the front doors, leaving shoes at the entrance.
  • Your temperature will be taken on entering the dojo, and you may not practice if you have a fever.
  • Arrive in your dogi.
  • Wear zori or slippers in the dojo when not on the mat.
  • Wear a mask.
  • Bring your own water bottle, no cups will be available.
  • Sanitize your hands before practice, after using the rest room, and as frequently as you need/want during practice.
  • Doors remain open and the fans on during class to improve air flow.
  • Train within demarcated spaces to limit close contact.
  • Everyone helps clean after practice. See Cleaning the Dojo.
  • Clean your gi after each class, and leave nothing at the dojo.

After each class, the following additions to our standard cleaning protocol will be followed.

  • Ensure that the mats are cleaned with thymol cleaning solution. Let’s be a bit more thorough and ‘put some elbow grease into it.’
  • Wipe down any weapons used with disinfectant cleaner
  • Wipe down all surfaces with disinfectant cleaner.

In order to minimize possibility of transmission
  • If you suspect exposure to COVID-19, stay home and monitor yourself for symptoms for fourteen days before returning to the dojo.
  • Stay home while awaiting results of a COVID-19 test.
  • If you have been diagnosed with COVID-19, please stay home until your medical care provider says you are no longer contagious.
  • If you suspect exposure or contract COVID-19, you are required to let the dojo know for tracking purposes. Email

I have read and understood the foregoing assumption of risk, and release of liability and I understand booking a session/class obligates me to indemnify the parties named for any liability for injury or death of any person and damage to property caused by my negligent or intentional act or omission. I understand by booking a session/class and accepting this form I am waiving valuable legal rights.
